“And I know what I am doing!” Menta argued back.
Dash glanced over at Cocoa. The rumors about the fighting sisters were true. And Dash could see why. The fairies were different in every way imaginable. Peppa had blond hair and was tall and thin. Menta had dark hair and was much shorter and wider. Dash wondered how they managed to win so many races with all their bickering.
“So these are the champions?” Cocoa whispered.
“Yes,” Dash said. She watched as they took off down the slope. They sailed around the first turn, and then they were gone. “They always manage to win.”
“Well, not this year!” Cocoa said, trying to sound enthusiastic.
The two friends began their practice run. They sled through the first part of the course. Dash was yelling instructions to Cocoa and kept a close watch on their time. Feeling pleased with their run, Dash smiled to herself.
This is going to be a smooth race, she thought.
On the approaching turn to the chocolate slope, the sled began to slip. Dash held on tight.
“It’s the chocolate!” Cocoa shouted over the rushing wind. “We need to slow down as we make the turn!”
“But we’ll lose time,” Dash said anxiously. She leaned back to speak to Cocoa. She couldn’t turn around. She had to keep her eyes on the course. “We can’t slow down!” she shouted. “I know what I’m doing!”
“Cold chocolate gets very slick,” Cocoa advised. “This part of the slope is dangerous.”
Dash tried to respond, but no sound came out of her mouth. Her yelling made her throat tickle, and then the coughing started again. As she coughed she lost control of the sled. The sled rammed into a scoop of chocolate fudge swirl.
Cocoa jumped out of the sled. “What are you doing?” she barked. “You can’t just turn off the course like that!” Then Cocoa realized Dash had crashed because of her coughing.
Quickly Cocoa gave her friend the thermos. Only this time, the tea didn’t soothe the cough. Dash’s whole face was red, and her eyes were filled with tears.
Dash felt woozy. There was no denying the fact that she was sick. And now the sled was damaged. This was a giant minty mess.
